Focal Shockwave Therapy
Focal Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers a precise dose of shockwave energy to a specific depth beneath the skin, making it especially effective for deeper or more complex musculoskeletal conditions that haven't responded to other treatment.
At Adelaide Sports, we use the Swiss DolorClast® Focused system, using piezoelectric technology to deliver high-energy shockwaves comfortably and accurately to the optimal depth for your condition.
For symptoms below the knee, we suggest you start with a podiatry appointment as your starting point.
How does it work?
The handpiece generates pressure waves that travel through the tissue and converge at a precise focal point beneath the skin, reaching depths of several centimetres. This concentrated energy stimulates blood flow and the body's natural repair response at the exact site of injury, while also helping to disrupt pain signals from local nerve fibres. Because the energy is focused rather than spread across a broad area, it's particularly effective for deeper structures like calcified tendons, bone and layered or complex pathology.
What does it treat?
Calcific rotator cuff tendinopathy (shoulder)
Chronic plantar fasciopathy and Achilles tendinopathy
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome and other pain syndromes
Myofascial pain and trigger points
Lumbar, cervical and pelvic pain
Bone lesions, including stress fractures and delayed or non-union
Shoulder adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
Sessions & Cost

FAQ
-
Your practitioner will confirm you're a suitable candidate and may combine Focal Shockwave with other treatments where appropriate. Gel is applied to your skin and the handpiece is held firmly in place over the treatment area — each session takes just a few minutes. You may feel some pressure or discomfort during treatment, easing quickly afterwards, along with some mild soreness over the area treated for a day or two.
